Special thanks are in order for not ripping me off; that is always a very special concern to me. The fact that you genuinely want to help after you’ve been paid, is an extremely rare quality — at least in this neck of the woods. Thanks again for being who you are.— Al Benner

Important — While all of the comments on this page are real comments from real people, they are not necessarily “typical.” There is, in fact, no “typical” result. Each person’s experience and results are unique, and as you probably know, success in business is never guaranteed. What you can take away from our student’s comments is the overall quality of the course materials and the true, best-we-can-teach-you, potential for success...
Dear Pam and Jeff,
Just a quick note to thank you for your business integrity. You deliver what you promise which is less and less the case anymore.
Frankly, I purchased your material a bit skeptically. Over the last 25 years I’ve built a very successful business. I read the marketing material looking for trouble. Instead, what I found were the principles that have made me a successful businessman.
For anyone without this history or background, let me encourage you to follow Jeff’s principles. They work. I know because I’ve because I’ve been applying them now for 25 years.
Thanks for telling the truth and at a reasonable price.
Kind Regards,
Stephen O. Meidahl
I have been a customer service manager in retail photography for the past 15 years and I can say without reservation the you two have demonstrated the highest level of professionalism I have witnessed in this industry for many years. Keep up the great work!!!— Larry Basinger
Your course materials are a delight and right on. I have worked for PCA (K Mart and Wal Mart), Knack & Richards, glamour & wedding photography. I have also sold real estate and life insurance. I have taken extra courses on my own some good some not, so I know what I’m talking about. Never before have I even come close to putting all the creative and marketing tools together. Your course was just the all around “button down” information I need in one complete package. — Thanks, Bonnie
...a side note about this session: she told me at the end of the session that she would probably want everything, meaning the Deluxe Session Package, which I have priced at $995! I had resisted pricing my packages this high for so long, but you gave me the confidence to finally do it! — Angela Griffin
WOW!!! Amazing course; definite kudos to you. I was looking for a long time for something to help push me closer to my studio business, but with confidence. I have taken University classes, but would never recommend that over this Not Your Normal School of Photography. I am so glad I found you guys... I will definitely be referring you to all of my photography friends. — Natasha Enns
I’ve been a hobbyist in photography for the last twenty years, and with retirement from my full time job in the near future, I’ve decided to start a photography and custom framing business. I’ve taken several courses in photography including one from New York City which I didn’t get much out of.
I was a little skeptical of taking “another photography course,” but this was one of the best choices I’ve ever made. The member’s only web site is packed with more information that anyone can get going and start a photography business right away.
Thanks for giving me the information that you could only learn by “trial and error” and saving me a lot of time and money in starting my business.
Sincerely,
Bob Day
I couldn’t have gotten my website up without you. — Rick Davis
I would just like to say that all the material in the course is the best stuff I have ever seen and I can tell you that I have gone through a lot of stuff over the years.
Thank you for all that you have done and keep up the great work. If the world were made up of more people like you we would all be better off. — Jim McMahon
Business here is going steady, I’m averaging 2 sessions a week. It’s the pace I want to be right now. Everyone is happy with my work. My pictures are 100% better now. Thanks so much!! — Linda Boyd
Dear Pam & Jeff;
I retired after 32 years and wanted to see if I can make money from my passion for Photography. The problem is I had no idea where to begin.
After 32 years of working in a corporate environment I was much more used to a very structured way of conducting business with very sound Business Plans. Becoming an entrepreneur was very new (and scary) to me.
Your course has given me everything I was looking for. It showed me how to get started from A to Z. I now have a very good understanding of a solid Photography Business Plan, and the best part of it is, that you put it all in one place for me. Sincerely
Dan Mitchell
I have always felt like I had an eye for portrait photography, but I also believed that, like with other arts, if a person wasn’t in the top 1% you just could not make a living with your art. Your course has shown me that I was wrong.
I am a teacher. I received the course in mid-November, just before Thanksgiving break. I spent that weekend consuming your course. By Christmas vacation I had the studio set up in my living room and was taking pictures of friends to start building my portfolio. On January 15th I had my first paying customer. I jumped right in at $495 for the session, and the customer was quite willing to pay it.
Other courses have given me boring detail about my camera — your course has given me the tools to actually make money at something I love. We now offer 3–4 sessions on a weekend and are filling those sessions when we offer them. — Tim Wuth
It has been a real up lifting experience working with Pam & Jeff, plus this type of photography is rewarding. You are providing a service where someone is extremely satisfied, happy and complimentary of your work. You feel like you are doing something worth while, something that might even make a difference. And you are receiving monetary compensation in return.
This is GREAT! Your clients want to see you succeed so they do all they can to assist you in obtaining new clients. Have I already said it? This is GREAT! My initial prices are somewhat reduced versus Pam’s prices, however, the first weekend booked (people actually paid for the session) I did 8 sessions and brought in over $2,000.00. I’ve done outdoor photography for over 2 years and never received that kind of return. — Mark Melvin
I’ve completed your Course and I have to comment on the high quality presentation of the material.
I found your course Manuals to be filled-to-the-brim with excellent training and development instruction! The organization of the Material and excellent teaching & coaching by Pam are A+ excellent! Jeff’s tips and motivational comments are superb; as well as the priceless “tricks of the trade” marketing guide to build a Performance business.
I feel I’ve made a quantum leap to the next level. — Thanks for everything! Jeff Buttars
It’s the coolest feeling in the world when someone writes me a check for taking pictures. Something I love doing. You guys are great — thanks for all you do. — Bob Richards
I recently shot a family reunion of 22 people. The orders were great, but the joy the photos brought to them was most meaningful to me. Everyone I have photographed has been really pleased.
I thought I knew a lot about marketing, but your course gave me so many new tools and techniques I don’t know if I will ever be able to use them all. I love the photo course, too. There is always something more to be learned. — Marcy Reese
I have been shooting for 33 years. What you speak of in your KIT hits the nail right on the head. We photographers hate sell. You make it understandable. Thank you for describing the process of marketing in KIDDY Language for a person like me. You make it so that I can spin the wheel of marketing without my having to invent it. Thanks for being out there... George Gray
I love the way you and Jeff have laid out the material. It succinctly and directly tells me what is important (wheat) and what is not (chaff). I have not wasted a single moment of my time. I don’t feel that way about the NYIP schools. You’ve surpassed their capabilities to focus on what’s crucial to know! Thanks a lot! — Mark S. Tuck
GREAT. It is great the way you include everything needed to get going. I love the way you concentrate on getting the job done and not all the tech stuff.
The newsletters are wonderful for keeping the momentum going and the web site articles are priceless. This program does not cause you to become intimidated by all you need to learn. It encourages you to do it and gives you the info so you can in a short time.
I think it’s great you give useful information for all areas of the business as well as motivation. I never considered doing portraits until I saw your course. Now I love it. The completeness of the information and the get right to it information has allowed me to jump right in. — Sherry Huffman
The course is so extreme - nicely done, well thought out and so informative. I know I will be referring to this course for years. I only received it yesterday, but I already regret ever hearing of NYIP and taking courses at my local college. — Jonnelle Ulbin
Words are hard to come by in showing my appreciation for what you and Pam have accomplished in the past year in helping me get my business off to a great start.
I continually refer to your course and newsletters when looking for inspiration and answers about running my business.
You know, there are ups and downs in this business and not everything goes as planned. But when I have a “down day” I simply sit back and re-evaluate what didn’t work and why it didn’t work. The answers of “why it didn’t work” is always in the course and newsletters.
BTW, I just booked two rabbit shows (didn’t know those bunnies sell for big bucks!) and a large cat show (cats from all over the USA) where I will be the only photographer. These people saw my photos and contacted me to do these shows. This is in addition to my family sessions already booked this fall PLUS senior high school packages.
I just turned 70 years young and I credit your course and your untiring efforts to make me successful in spite of my many “Senior moments” (those of you who are retired know what I mean!).
That “little ad” of yours that I saw sure changed my life for the better. Thanks and continued success to you and Pam.
My best,
Jerry James
Hi Pam and Jeff,
I am a 23 year old college student. Your course has been loaded with great information. Your course teaches me the things that I need to know to have a great photography business. It teaches me the things that my college courses don’t. With this course I will be a better business woman. Thank you guys for offering the NYN course. Sometimes I wonder how you do it all. You must have little elves helping you there on The Farrm. Thank you.” — Jessica Wood
I enrolled in the NY Institute of Photography and never finished it. It was was dry and boring. You offer the things we need to get our businesses off the ground. — Kathy White
Dear Pam and Jeff,
I am a longtime editor and photographer. Your course is unusually comprehensive, practical and easy to understand. I love what you have to say and how Jeff says it. — David Kennedy, Writer and Photographer
Hi Pam and Jeff!
For years I dreamed of doing something I love and earning money while I had fun. But never knew how! I took 5 courses, got a little diploma, spent about $1,000 in 2 years! Guess what. I understood my camera better and that was it. Finished, done! I thought it was hopeless. And then there was you! I immediately felt like there was someone who was willing to be my mentor. Your down to earth approach is exactly what I needed to get me where I am now! Both of you are great!— Beate Tranbargerer
Dear Pam and Jeff,
Your “Not Your Normal” Photography Course presents a wealth of knowledge to anyone interested in the photography business. You can believe me when I say that I have never enjoyed learning as much as when reading through your lively text. Your entertaining style makes it easy to read and understand. I became a “night owl” without realizing how fast time passed while I was submerged in your books. The information provided by you is priceless!
I hope you will use my testimonial to show others the value of your course. Sincerely, Joel M. Krane
I purchased the Deluxe NYN photography course because I wanted to start a part time photography business. I’ve always enjoyed taking photos of my family and pets, but never thought I could turn it into a career. In March I decided to open my part time photography studio specializing in people and pets and have really enjoyed every moment of this exciting opportunity. Your course has been a great resource in helping me understand what people want and teaches me ways to deliver that I never thought of before. In time I hope to become as knowledgeable about photography as you both and I can’t thank you both enough. Please use my testimonial as you wish. Jennifer Tichenor, Franklin, Indiana
I am nearly booked up through November and am booking sessions for December. I have learned a lot since selling my bass boat and maxing out my credit card. You gave me the confidence that I could do this type of photography, I am so thankful. Again, thank you both so much for making this form of photography accessible to the public, I am dearly grateful. Take excellent care. — Daryl Hemmings
An idea for getting started with little or no money even without any photos to start with. Approach children specialty shops and using a box with a poster offering free photos (two of their choice) in exchange for use as portfolio. I presented a full package and allowed them their choice of two matted photos free....well guess what! about 90% bought the extra photos with some purchasing the whole photo shoot at a cost of $595.— Sharon Belcher
Your course was invaluable. I’ve learned so much and was impressed with the responses received from our customers viewing this new style of photographing. I am a wedding photographer also and you should see the excitement as never before.
My profits have increased dramatically. I am very pleased. — Thanks for your help, Matt Tomcsanyi
The course is everything I expected and more! In fact, I’m using some of the photo marketing ideas in my massage business!! That was a bonus I didn’t expect. Thanks!!! — Zayne
Dear Pam & Jeff,
Just a few words about your “Not Your Normal School of Photography” course.
I have been “into” photography since my Jr. High School days, back in the early ’60’s. I have taken two correspondence courses from two different “Name” schools as well as attending some of those seminars and a professional school of photography in the past. Those other courses may have taught the technical aspect of photography, but your course goes beyond that.
In the past, my photography was mostly for my personal enjoyment. But since my success after taking your course, I am being asked, more & more, by others to have me take their portraits. They come to me. I haven’t promoted myself at all.
I am now in the process of having my “hobby” support itself. Thanks to you & your course, I can now afford better equipment and to travel to take photos of places & things that were never possible in the past.
All this & extra money in my pocket, to boot.
As you can probably tell, I think your course is great & highly recommend it. Sincerely yours, Thomas Stafford
Dear Pam + Jeff,
As I have already told you on the phone, I think your course is really terrific! It’s really well put together, super well organized, and overflowing with information, ideas, and techniques. It must have taken a monumental effort! I am equally impressed with your availability and willingness to provide help and support, and the way you follow up by sending out information promptly. Without your help I wouldn’t have know where to start working. — Steve Lankford
I was attracted to your ad since my recent retirement allowed me the time to pursue a second career, not especially for the income, but more for pleasure. I ordered the course, a lot of money, I thought. However I was pleased, when I realized that it met the need of every business, who with a great idea lacked the knowledge of marketing that idea. I recognized the emphasis on marketing along with a detailed plan to be successful with all the source research one would need. A motivated person cannot find a better place for a great amount of useful marketing information with enough photography to be successful. — Joseph Zarick
Well, I finally found time to study and picked-up quite a few things that are helping to increase my profits. You and Pam really put a lot of effort into your materials. — Paul Prough
Pam,
I really enjoyed visiting with you by phone this afternoon...
After our conversation, I thought I would write down my thoughts about NYNP (Not Your Normal School of Photography).
I picked up a camera when I was 15 years old and have been shooting ever since. I’m 48 now and, after years as a newspaper editor and photographer, I am finally pursuing what I love the most; full-time photography.
I have to admit I was skeptical (journalists take Skepticism 101 in college) about the “Make $2970 in a weekend...” ad so it took a leap of faith for me to order the course. But I did. When I finally committed to study the material, my attitude changed. My skepticism receded enough that I could entertain the notion of building a good business. And, the more I read, the more I became convinced I could be successful at portraiture photography. Your clear, concise instruction on technique and Jeff’s wonderful candor about marketing helped me hurdle the greatest obstacle I had to success... my own “stinking” thinking.
I assembled a bare bones studio setup, solicited friends and neighbors for practice sessions and started shooting. My friends and neighbors have nominated me for sainthood (they loved the photos and the style) and even I was a bit impressed. (I tend to be my own harshest critic.)
This past weekend I shot my first “for pay” session, a young man graduating from high school who brought Mom with him. Everything you wrote about their nerves was true but after a few minutes of the “Pam Farr treatment” everyone relaxed and we had a great time. I attached one of the “fun” photos and the rest are as good or better.
Thanks again for the best course on becoming successful in this business. — John Ater
I’ve been photographing most everything for over 20 years as a hobby. I do it because I love it. It never really occurred to me that it could be my main occupation.
I had seen the ads for a long time, and decided to see what was up with this “great idea.” At first I was a little reluctant to invest the money, but I can tell you that I’m glad I did. The marketing ideas are excellent, and the ongoing support through the newsletter keeps the idea factory going! The Not Your Normal School of Photography has given me the confidence to begin with a working system. I may change some things later, but the fact is that it was a jump start to starting a photography business. I have a plan and I will enjoy the journey. — Thanks, Tim Summach
I would like to let you know that since I began the course, I have gained the confidence to go
out and make money with my camera. I was asked to assist at a press conference with Bank of America and
the Chivas Soccer Club. There was some sort of promo going between the two, and my friend
asked for my assistance. Not a bad start! I have also just been given the chance to shoot
product for a catalog. I just
wanted to say “thanks” for boosting my confidence and my technical know how!
Regards,
Bill Carson
This course has been just what I needed to jump-start my dream career. It was nice to find a course that gave me so much practical knowledge. I now have a step-by-step example of what to do to become a working (paid) studio photographer. I have my first photo session next weekend and am really excited! Just family and friends this time, but a start at building my portfolio and lots of good practice. Thank you for a great course!— Carol J. Robbins
I just wanted to let you know how glad I am that I found your course on the web. I have been wanting to find a job that would give me the flexibility to work when I wanted and as little as I wanted. I have been wanting to pursue a career in photography but felt that the market was so saturated that I would not be able to compete and still make a good living. I also knew the importance of good marketing but again I did not feel that it was something that I could do. Then by accident I came across your add on the web. I thought that it was simply too good to be true but it was exactly what I was looking for so I just had to check it out. I simply could not read fast enough! By the time I finished reading your book I was convinced that I had to keep going...it was like a dream come true. I had a camera and was thinking about investing in a light setup but I still didn’t have sufficient funds and definitely not enough for the lights and your course. I decided to get the course first and I am so glad that I did. I noticed your recommendation to try to schedule some initial sessions. At first I thought “Are you nuts?” I am not ready for that yet, and besides I can’t wait to learn more. But then I thought well, you are the experts so I thought for a little while about who I could start with and in less than an hour I had scheduled my first three sessions. Even though I offered to do it for my expenses since I was just getting started, they all said that they would be happy to pay me for my services. I about passed out. By following your suggestion I was well on my way to having the money that I needed for my lights as well as the other things that I need to complete my studio. Now that I have finished the course I have the confidence that I made the right choice. Thank you for sharing your success, It has been a real pleasure learning how I can work at something that I love and still make a good living working on my schedule. — Thomas P. Fraga
Hello Pam and Jeff! Just wanted to let you know that your course is just awesome. It has really helped me settle all the doubts of how to market yourself and start making money as a professional photographer. A friend of mine who has been into photography for many years thought I was dreaming when I told him I wanted to be a pro photographer. After seeing the the results of my first session he couldn’t believe how good the images were and he has no doubt that it’s possible now. So thanks for giving me the push-start I needed NYNP!
George Koury Olivebridge, New York
I started college last fall working toward a degree in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Photography. I have loved taking photographs for over 20 years. But as I went to school, I was very disappointed in the instruction. In January, ordered the NYN Photography courses and was immediately helped with more than photography. The Marketing course is helping me to sell postcards to local businesses. Also I printed two of my photos on canvas and a local shop owner called me and asked if he could display them on his barn wood wall. So many different doors are opening for my business and I am thankful for the insights that you and Pam have offered for new photographers and business owners. Thank you, Nancy Vencill, Vencill Studios.
Please use this to help encourage others to follow their dreams.
Hello Jeff and Pam!!! I just want to say THANK YOU for the amazing course! In less than 3 months I have made nearly 2K in the photography business. Your course is more than just a photography course, it is a complete roadmap to actually creating a photography business. I just completed my first set of photo sessions. The results were astounding. I got nearly $2,000 in reprints and testimonials out the wazooo!!!! Once again, thanks for all of the great advice. Warmest Regards, Jenea Pate
How can I put into words, how can I Thank You appropriately? It was with your Love, Guidance, and Support that launched my photography career. If it weren’t for you it wouldn’t have happened! I am finally doing “what I love” and loving every minute of it! I feel so guilty as I don’t feel like I’m “working”! I’m getting paid for having fun! I tend to be a “shy” person and was worried that people wouldn’t like my pictures. It was one thing when family and friends were looking at them and oohing and ahing over them. It was quite another thing to ask people to pay for them. People have a different criteria when they’re putting out money... Well no worries there!!!!! It is the best moment when they pick up their pictures and they almost cry! I can’t thank you enough! I’m so happy and having so much fun! Yours truly, Judi Moses
If having the freedom to do what you want when you want is important to you...
If making money doing something that’s creative and fun is appealing ~ and ~
You would like to have the “how tos” laid out for you in clear, complete detail...
I am a student of yours and have my business up and running seriously. Things just keep getting better and better. Your system is a slam dunk and I wanted to say thanks. Kind Regards, Bob Knapik, Photographer
Dear Fellow Photographer,
In the e-book The Secret Of Making $2,970.00 In One Weekend Photographing People And Pets, and the free 6-day e-course you received a solid foundation for pointing your photography business in the right direction.
But, as I’m sure you realize — as it is with just about anything — there are a lot of little details you need to know to get your business on the right track, quickly and safely.
For example, in our type of business...
This is all the insider information you’d get if you were to buy our business or if you were to buy a franchise from us if we sold one (we don’t).You need to know all the “tricks” of getting people (and pets!) to do what you want (with a smile on their face!)
You need to know exactly what equipment to get and exactly how to set it up
You need to know how to put together a session package that people will pay good money for
You need to know exactly how to word your promotional materials for maximum response
You need to know who to send them to
You need to know how to set up your automated online marketing machine (this is where the real fun begins!), and so on...
This is the information Pam wished she’d had when she first started out in business. It’s the information we’d gladly pay many thousands of dollars for if we suddenly got “photo business amnesia” and forgot everything we knew. You see, there is just no substitute for specific, hands-on, nitty-gritty information when you want to get a business and career going. And that’s what Pam and I give you in the Not Your Normal Photography® Business Success Course— real-world, tested information, in exacting detail.
I can also guarantee you won’t find any other course that’s as complete or on-target as what Pam and I will provide you with. Incomplete books and other minor materials simply aren’t going to get you to where you want to be...
I wish I had your course two years ago before I spent a small fortune on individual books from posing and lighting to matting. I was skeptical to try your NYNP course (having been burned in the past). However, your course was everything you claimed it would be, written in a sensible, readable manner and has saved me countless hours of research and frustration. — Sharon Hummel
Nor will overblown technical courses and college programs that will actually slow down your progress...
Dear Pam and Jeff, I have been a photographer since graduating from the New York Institute in 1990, but I’ve never been able to make any serious money at it... until now! Your course materials have motivated me to set up a small studio in my home and I am truly grateful to you two for enabling me to realize a dream that’s been dormant for 15 years! Keep up the good work!!! — Van R. Davies
Hi Jeff and Pam, Just so you guys know, I loved the first course. I am graduating with a B.S. in Marketing this June and I am getting my certificate from NYIP (New York Institute of Photography) and your course has provided me with more helpful information on how to get started on my own than both of the others. Until next time, photographically yours, LeeAnn Kline
This is the one photo course that actually made me feel like I could do it on my own. It was well written and easy to understand, the marketing part was very surprising and phenomenal in that it was full of lots of ideas. It also inspired me. Far outweighs them all. I was a student at the NYIP but did not finish as I got too bogged down with technicalities. — Ruben Garza
“Going it alone” won’t do it either... I’ve learned that one the hard way myself. The right information can literally take years off your learning curve.
Jeff & Pam, After starting and operating my own digital imaging business for four years now I am in awe at how proficient you both are at what you do! I know first hand how hard this stuff is to figure out from scratch!
Jeff you really are a marketing wizard and Pam [in the studio course] gives dedicated insight to the creation of her photographs every step of the way. To get so much information together like this that is so to the point, tested and described so well was a surprise to me because I have never seen anything like it. I like how I don’t have to “sift” through extra information to get what I need to make it happen.
Thanks again, Scot Guariglia
You know, it’s funny that many people spend $20,000 or more for a college education, and when they come out, they still don’t know what to do or how to get started. Why? Because their education was too general and not focused on the right things — the things that lead directly to success!
Let me just say that I went to 2 years of college for photography and learned some great skills, but your course teaches specific skills that you just can’t learn in a “normal” school. Between the natural style photography instruction Pam gives [in the studio course], and the extremely valuable marketing information that Jeff provides, this course is essentially a business in a box! When I graduated from school, I got frustrated because they pretty much gave me a pat on the back and wished me luck with putting all the skills I just learned to work. —Kevin Santavy
P.S. Just to let you know, my college degree has been packed up in a box ever since graduation. When I get the NYN certificate, it WILL be immediately hung on my wall!
Dear Pam and Jeff,
Don’t tell anyone, but I am ashamed to admit I was concerned when I purchased my course in Not Your Normal Photography. I have a BA and had been under the impression that correspondent/mail order education was inferior and probably just some crummy marketing scam. I told myself I would just send it back within the 90 day money back guarantee and hope no one would find out what I had done!
It is nice to be proven wrong when the outcome is so positive. Not Your Normal Photography is actually more practical than a college education (although I am glad I did complete college albeit 23 years ago). I devoured the course materials and found everything to be to the point and encouraging too. I looked at our Jr. College’s Photography Certificate and AA degree and figured it would take me 5 years to complete (I have four children 9-13). Time is of the essence.
Not Your Normal Photography has given me the tools and confidence to open my own
studio and begin shooting today! Thank you so much for your materials, for your humor
and for sharing your lifestyle with others like me.
Sincerely,
Sue Wood Migliozzi
It is certainly not knowing how to take good photographs! The ability to take good photographs — or at least good enough to satisfy a client — is a prerequisite for being in business. But good photographic skills do not make a business or allow you to be a pro, only good business skills can make you a professional photographer.
And that is what the Not Your Normal Business Success Course is about — how to find people interested in doing business with you, how to convert them to paying customers, and how to keep them coming back over and over (while referring all their friends to you!).
You’ll also learn important “administrative” skills — acquiring customers won’t do you much good if you can’t flow them through your business in an efficient and profitable manner!
Good business and the “key” to becoming and well paid pro actually requires three distinct skill sets — photo skills, marketing skills, and administrative skills. Furthermore, those three skill sets must fit into a business model and structure that supports your lifestyle. The reason most business courses, including entire college programs, fall short is because they do not teach a complete skill set — having some photo skills and knowing a few marketing “tricks” do not make a solid and consistent business!
Learning a bunch of useless “MBA” type-of-stuff won’t help you much in the real world of small get-your-lifestyle-right business, either. It will only slow you down. You need to ditch the theory and get right to it...
So I hope you’ll take a moment and take a look at the resources Pam and I have created for you. Note that the bulk of the business course was created by someone (me) who has been in various businesses since 1981. Since that year, I have supported myself entirely on my business activities and done so in a way that has given me a very free and easy lifestyle. And I have done this through multiple “recessions,” technological upheavals, personal and global financial disasters, shifting economics and consumer trends... in short, I have existed and excelled in nearly every economic “climate” you will run across and I have packed all that experience — including those subtle little things that only long term business survivors would know — into the business success course.
This isn’t the longest section of the course, but it’s certainly one the most important! Here you’ll learn the NYN “philosophy” and the important principles that lead to ultimate success.
Just as important — and perhaps most important — you’ll learn how to obliterate the things that hold you back. Many times people know the what to do and how to do it, but little “I can’t” perceptions keep them from getting to where they want to be.
We will smash those perceptions, and you’ll see how Pam and I have operated our business in some “less than ideal” conditions. Plus, you’ll learn about the little trick we use that literally “forces” rapid success. And we’ll even talk about how to deal with any negative psychological influences you may encounter because getting your business and lifestyle right starts with getting your “head” in the right “place.”
You’ll get a good dose of motivation, too. I’ve often said that education without motivation is worthless and we’ve had many course members thank us for the motivational “kick in the butt” and the ongoing encouragement we provide throughout the course.
I stayed up until 3 AM reading the intro — ! literally got so excited I couldn’t sleep. My heart was beating out of my chest and I kept thinking, “This is !T! I can make this work!” I am now 2/3 through the advanced course and I am AMAZED at all you have achieved and created. Every question I had, every worry! needed taming, and every doubt I had about my ability was taken care of by your course! BRAVO! I‘m not even finished with the course and I have 3 clients asking for my work. (enter “yippee!” dance here) and I’m just getting started. — Alanna Riley
While the Not Your Normal Studio Photography Course shows you how to produce a product that’s in high demand, Automatic Marketing shows you how to bring the demand to you.
Special note — no amount of “marketing genius” can make up for producing a product or service no one wants. Your ability to create services and products that are in demand are very much a part of your “marketing.” And so is is the way you treat your customers and flow them through your business.
That’s the reason why — for many years — Pam and I only offered this course bundled with the photography course... service, product, business model, and marketing all work together.
That said, the business and marketing you’ll learn in the Business Success Course can, and has, been used effectively with many kinds of businesses, photographic and otherwise.
I am appreciative of both the technical and motivational support I received from NYN and it contributed to the success I’ve achieved in the one year since opening my studio. I’ve gone from zero to an average of about $5,000 a month in session fees and print sales since opening my studio. And sales continue to grow at a nice rate. — George Delgado
Automatic Marketing is the essential foundation of how we find people who are interested in the products and services we offer, convert them to paying customers, and ultimately to “champions” of our business who return year after year and refer all their friends to us.
And as you might guess, the entire process is set up as a system that runs “automatically.”
Systems are the key to getting your business running efficiently and your life style crafted the way you want. Systems keep your business activities consistent and effective without your continued intervention, which frees you to do the creative and fun work!
In the Automatic Marketing part of the Business Success Course, you’ll find a complete description of the business system that has rewarded us with a steady stream of “pre-sold” customers, even though we don’t advertise, and don’t have a business phone.
The great thing about the way we do business is that you’re constantly “collecting” customers — customers who come back to you year after year, and refer more people to you! This process allows you to eventually run your business entirely on repeat and referral business. And that’s a really great place to be (it goes a long way to providing you with the lifestyle you seek). But you do need to get the proverbial “ball” rolling without taking up a lot of your time, and without spending a lot of money and the Automatic Marketing part of the Business Success Course will show you how to set up systems for that.
The Automatic Marketing part of the Business Success Course includes...
Along with the “blueprint for success” that details the fundamental automatic marketing systems and concepts, you’ll get relevant marketing materials we’ve used to run the systems including Pam’s “panic” letter that brought in $6,000.00 worth of business in a few short days. Plus, you’ll get the InfoPak that has automatically driven our business sales for many years. And much more...
In fact, I’ve included everything we’ve used that I thought would be helpful to you. In the “exhibits” section there are 168 pages of examples along my comments (this section alone could qualify as an entire real world marketing course!), and you can use these examples as models for your own materials. Learning about systems and concepts is necessary and good, but there is no better way to cement that knowledge than from examining actual examples of marketing pieces that have proved themselves in the marketplace.
Throughout the Automatic Marketing part of the Business Success Course you’ll be introduced to important business concepts and ideas, along with the core “automatic” systems.
Here’s what else you’ll learn...
Supercharged Marketing picks up where Automatic Marketing Manual. It’s for the person who doesn’t just want a steady stream of clients, but a steady STAMPEDE. It’s the information you need, not just to compete, but to make your competition want to leave town!
In the automatic marketing part of the course, you’ll get the techniques we used to get Pam’s business going keep it going on a controlled simmer. Supercharged Marketing shows you how to bring your business to a voracious boil even in tough business times and environments.
You’ll learn about buyer psychology and copy writing and you’ll take on the mind set of an advanced business person and marketer. We’ll also dive deeper into marketing on the Internet.
But the real beauty of this action guide is it’s high degree of usefulness — it’s ready-for-action toolkit approach. Each idea, each program, is broken out into digestible “chunks” for you to use as needed. Personally, I use some of the techniques some of the time, but not all of the techniques all of the time. In fact, some of the techniques I don’t use any of the time because we don’t want to get that busy! But they are there for you to use as needed and if you want to blow the lid off your business and “come out blastin,’” it is there for you.
Supercharged Marketing expands the systems first presented in Automatic Marketing and adds many, many, new ideas — all with the ultimate intent to turn you into a master marketer.
Here’s a small sampling of what you’ll find...
...just a small sampling — the Supercharged Manual is fully packed with savvy marketing and business know-how — all presented in small digestible “chunks” so you can refer to, and use them, as needed.
The Business Builder and Maintenance Kit is designed to get — and keep — your business on the right track and “in sync” with your lifestyle. It gives you the important step-by-step process needed to build and control the business you want! Frankly, most people ignore this process, or are ignorant of it. As a result, they end up where they don’t want to be. Don’t you be one of them!... use the Business Builder and Maintenance Kit to lay the solid foundation of a business that fits your needs, desires, and lifestyle.
All businesses need to be structured, managed, and controlled. These activities range from deciding which “legal entity” to use to managing client records to making sure your growth is controlled (from personal experience I can tell you that growing too fast can be as bad as not growing fast enough!).
In the NYNBA part of the Business Success Course, you’ll get the practical information you need to set up, run and control your business.
We cover the legal and organizational issues that most new business owners have questions about. And we do it in a straight forward manner. As you will see, setting up a business is really very quick and easy... much easier than most people new to business expect. There is just no reason to get hung on set up issues!
In additional to the set up issues, you will learn about the more important issues of making the “administrative” part of your business as efficient as possible. Administration is probably everyone’s least favorite part of business, so you might as well make it as easy as possible.
But the biggest issue of all is control. And out of control business will dominate your life instead enabling a lifestyle you want. So, included with the NYNBA materials are the 22 secrets of running and controlling your business.
For many years — 11 to be exact — Pam and I wrote a monthly newsletter and we packed it with photo course additions, new marketing ideas, motivation, perspectives on the NYN “lifestyle,” and more.
These days, we prefer to add materials on a more continuous basis rather than with a single monthly newsletter, however, the newsletter archives remain a rather large and useful resource, one that we refer to constantly ourselves!
So along with the Business Success Course, you’ll get full access to this valuable resource which would be over 1,000 pages if we printed it in its original “hard copy” form.
I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed the last newsletter I received from you. I really enjoy hearing from you. I am still using your materials to help me in my work. I mostly did weddings this year but my family portraits are getting to be more of my business, and I enjoy them so much more now because of your help. My wedding often include families getting together so that they often want a family portrait on that day, so you have helped me even with my wedding by making it a two fold thing. My clients just love them, too and I’ve enjoyed the benefits of large reorders. Glad to report I’ve had the best year in my career. I’m happy!! — Frances Woods
I just love your newsletter and look forward to every issue. It’s funny, witty, informative and down to earth nuts and bolts how to do it. Thanks for the constant motivation. — Glenn Golden
Some of our students tell me they start reading the newsletter archives from Issue #1, get “hooked” and end reading the entire collection in sequence. If this happens to you, I apologize in advance, but I am also sure you’ll enjoy the journey and benefit from it.
In any case, you will find a wealth of ideas and inspiration in the newsletter archives...
Hi Jeff & Pam, Just wanted to write a quick note to let you know that my wife
Susha and I acted on the vision you described in your Jan 07
newsletter on going
from “Home Based to No Base” with the help of virtual assistants.
Susha and I have no problem getting 20 to 30+ half hour sessions booked for
each weekend we choose to shoot on. 80.7% of our customers purchase
anywhere from a $395 package to $895 with the most popular being our $525
package. Our biggest challenge has been in getting everything edited in time
for the customers viewing appointments a week or so after their session.
Up until just 3 months ago we never even used Photoshop and finally bought
Adobe Elements. We are about ready to upgrade to Photoshop but find that it is
taking us to long to edit each package so after reading your article
on “Sever Farms and
Virtual Assistants” we decide what we really needed to do was to get
some hired guns to
help us free up our time to do more marketing and shooting. So we just
hired 3 virtual
assistants skilled in photoshop to do most of the editing for us!
Now instead of shooting weekends only in our living room we are
planning on targeting several
other towns here in Australia within a 5 hour drive from our home and
increasing the number of
days we that we shoot and sell.
We hesitated in the past to get help because we didn’t want to deal
with all the typical problems
associated with hiring employees. Didn’t want to become dependent on a
key employee or worry about providing them with benefits and funding
their SuperFund Account (Australia’s smarter version of your Social
Security) with three instead of one we won’t get hurt as much if one
decides to quit or simply does not work out.
I’m excited about what other gems we’ll discover buried in the other
back issues of your newsletters!
Cheers, Steve and Susha Shulenski
Hello Jeff and Pam,
I received the latest newsletter
yesterday, and I just wanted to drop
you a line and say “thanks!”
As always there are little gems of info, and I find myself saying
over and over to my wife Virginie that both of you, and what you are
making available, is “gold”. The ongoing research and constant
findings that you share are really appreciated!
Best Regards, Rob Healey
I love getting your newsletter every month. I scanned past articles and made lists of: books that you recommend, websites to visit, products and software to try, companies to check out, and things to research at the library, to use as a quick reference when I’m surfing and shopping. I just purchased several books that you recommend. It would have taken me forever to research and find all the things you recommend on my own — and some of them I probably would never have thought of. — Pamela Hewins
As I mentioned, we no longer produce a formal printed newsletter. One reason is we were consistently running out of room each month and we were unable to include videos, color photos, links to resources — there is just so much more we can do online. And online in the member only section is where you will find ongoing updates to the course materials, additions, even entirely new topics. As an ongoing member you will have continuous access to these updates and additions.
Thank you both for all the info on your web site. It has saved me tons of time. It is so packed with all the things that we need, I can only imagine how long it took youall to find them your first time. Anyway, I just wanted to say Thanks youall!
Included with your course, you’ll gain access to the best sources we’ve picked up over the years for the things you need to be in this business — supplies, outside services, “handy stuff” and where to get it. These resources alone can save you years of searching for the right sources!
With your enrollment you will have the opportunity to join our pro community. You’ll get the latest NYN news, blogs, forums, and other goodies in the village.
You’ll also get your own “residence,” and you’ll be able to create photo albums to show off your work, and even contribute articles if you like.
You’ll also get the opportunity to list yourself, your business, and the products and services you provide — a great option if you don’t have web site of your own. Alternatively, or in addition, you can use your listing to send people to your own web site.
NotYourNormalville has been a great addition to the Not Your Normal School of Photography Courses and we continue to build and add features to it!
I look forward to seeing you in town!
You’ve earned it... show it!
The completion of the Business Success Course entitles you to the NYN school official certificate. This great looking certificate is ready to hang and show the world that you’ve studied and completed the business success course. It’s the perfect companion to the studio course certificate which you will also be entitled to receive.
The Not Your Normal Photography Business Success Course was once a print-only course. The full pro course filled nine large manuals and weighed over 30 lbs. It was an armload!...

When the Internet became a viable media, we greatly expanded the content of the course online. In those early Internet days, however, connection speeds and computer monitors were not quite up to having an entire course online, so we retained the printed portion as the core, and used the web site for updates and additions.
All that has changed. The Internet now allows us to offer much more than we ever could via print, at a lower cost, all while saving a few trees, which one reason we call them the “tree hugger” versions.
The online courses are also “living and breathing” meaning that we can, and do, continuously update and expand the materials.
But do keep in mind that the core online course materials are still a course designed to take your knowledge from one level to another in a step-by-step manner. This is important. There are many online resources that simple present a bunch of articles with no overall focus or cohesion. This can quickly get you distracted learning things you don’t need to know and/or not learning the complete systems — with all the parts in place — you need to be effective in business.
In the print-only days, we had many students drag around the big heavy manuals so they could learn and study while traveling or otherwise away from home. No more — the online version of the course allows you to study from anywhere with an Internet connection. Plus, you can take it in small chunks as you find time.
When you enroll in the Not Your Normal Studio Photography Business Success Course, you will immediately be sent a download link for the course PDFs. You can print and read these versions offline if you like.
Naturally, the PDFs don’t include all the extended features of the online version, but they are a complete course and will serve as a reference for many years to come.
Pam and I have really tried hard to give you a complete and clear paint-by-the-numbers plan for your photography business. I think you will find the course complete and easy to follow. A lot of effort has gone into making it that way, and over the years, we have “filled in the gaps” and made improvements as questions came up.
But we do want to make double sure that you have all the information you need to be successful. (If for some reason you don’t become successful, I want to be able to sleep well knowing it wasn’t because of us — something that you didn’t completely understand, or something unusual came up that we could have helped you with.)
So, you will find several levels of support...
First step is to search the site — there are the equivalent of over 3,000 printed pages on the site, so there’s a good chance you’ll find your answer. Second step is to ask in the forums... we have a lot of smart and talented residents in NotYourNormalville. Third, you can fill out a support form and we will handle your question individually via e-mail, phone, or other type of consultation if necessary.
For over a decade, the Not Your Not Normal Business Success Course was only available in a printed version for a tuition fee of $997 (current tuition for the printed version is $1197). To some, that was a lot of money, at least until they realized the full value of what they were given...
When I first got your course my wife almost had a stroke because of the price. She has since seen the value and has also read the course. When we do sessions she is right there with me in the studio. I have given her the title of “set director”. She helps the subjects with posing and props and has a lot of good input She has become a valuable asset. It has actually drawn us closer to each other and we love it and thank you for it. — Fred and Michelle Powell
It was extremely scary paying so much for a bunch of paper that could possibly have no more use than being kindling! But now that I have your Not Your Normal Photography course — I think I would have paid double, (if I would have known exactly what I was getting.) — Alanna Riley
Not Your Normal photography is the best. The best at teaching a new way to photograph people, the best in marketing information, the best newsletter for your members. I said it earlier, I wish I had taken advantage of NYN long ago. At first you think you spent a lot of money for the course. Then as you learn and study, you understand that it is not money spent, but an investment for your future. — Joe Johnson
When you consider the value of what you’re getting, the current $1197 tuition for the printed version is extremely fair.
And when you compare it to the cost of buying a business franchise at $100-$300,000 — a Glamour Shots franchise, for example, requires $235,000 — or going to business school — getting an MBA at Wharton Business School will set you back $320,000 — the fee seems embarrassingly small.
Even going to a weekend of business seminars can cost you thousands. I know, I been to plenty of them. Some are good, but none of them will give you complete information on a viable business that’s fun, personally rewarding, highly profitable, and can be molded to fit your life-style in the way we can teach you, having “been there, done that.”
Your course is fantastic. I am a traditionally trained photographer with almost 20 years experience. Pam’s style of non-traditional photography methods and your marketing genius have been a life saving breath of fresh air for my career. Thank you for making it all available for a reasonable fee! — Mark A. Bass
The fact is, Pam and I have been teaching and helping photographers get started in business since 1997. We know how to teach clearly — we know where the pitfalls are — and we know what questions you will have.
Pam, in fact, has kept a file with every question and every problem we, or our course members, have run into. We’ve used this to continually update and improve the courses based on the real experiences of our students.
So, at this point, what you’re getting is actually the collective wisdom of a few thousand photographers all focused on one thing — living a fun, creative, and profitable lifestyle making money with their cameras. Truth is, you’ll be getting more than double the information and value that past students have gotten, so we are really due for a “tuition increase” probably into the thousands.
But the really good news is, for the moment, we’re not going to charge you thousands, or even the current printed course fee of $1197.
The tuition fee for the entire online edition of the Business Success Course is only $897.
For serious business students, and people who want to invest in their future, that shouldn’t require much of a decision process. Still, I realize that is a lot of money to some (there was a time when it was a lot to me!!!), so we have also created three installment plans to make the course more affordable from a cash flow standpoint — you can choose 3 installments of $329, 6 installments of $179, or 12 installments of $97.
Special note about the installment plans — If you add up the installments you will find that the total tuition is higher the longer you spread out the payments (this reflects added administrative and other costs on our end). The installment plans, however, turn out to be a bargain if you consider the wasted time and lost oppotunity cost of not getting started now. The cost of waiting — not moving forward towards your goals — can dwarf the relatively minor added costs of the installments. Preventing lost opportunity is why many businesses borrow money, even at high costs. Rest assured, Pam and I prefer that everyone pays in full, but we realize that is not possible for everyone, so the installment plans are there for you if you need them.
You can also try out the Business Success Course at no risk to you — we want you to be completely thrilled with your course, and have it be right for you. If within 90 days, for any reason you are not satisfied with the materials — if they haven’t changed your life for the better — just let us know, and you can return the program for a full refund.
When you enroll in the Photography Business Success Course, you’ll get a downloadable PDFs along with 6 months access to the online “living and breathing” course materials, plus online extras including the 1000+ page newsletter archive, videos, support, the community, resources and more. You’ll get the all of course materials promptly (we don’t dribble them out like other “correspondence” courses or offline college classes — for a fast start, you need it all).
Ongoing access, updates, and additions — some of our students like to learn and move on. Others like to stay with us, and many have for years because we are continually updating and adding to the online materials. You will get online access and support for 6 months, which is plenty of time to absorb the materials (much longer that a tradtional college semester!). The downloadable PDFs, of course, are yours to keep for a lifetime. If you would like to continue to have access to the online materials and continued suport after the first six months, the ongoing tuition is only $21 per month. Stay as long or short as you like, you may cancel at any time. Of course, we hope we’ll prove our value to you and you’ll stick around, but the choice is yours.
So will you join us? The trick to getting where you want to be is to get started on the right path the easiest and fastest and way possible. Time is of the essence, and each minute you wait pushes your ultimate goals further into the future.
And if you think about the time it would take you to figure out even a tiny fraction of what we teach in our course (if you could even do it), I think you’ll agree that what we are asking is a very small price to pay.
Pam and I look forward to your enrollment!
Photographically yours,

P.S. As I was finishing this course description up, a fellow entrepreneur faxed me a little list about why we take the path we do. Being in business isn’t always easy, but when you see the rewards itemized like this, could there be any other choice?
A nice list — sometimes I forget how good we really have it! OK, time for me to shut up and let you take care of business...What entrepreneurs are thankful for...

Hi Pam & Jeff, I have to admit that I had reservations at first sending that kind of money to total strangers. I have been burned before in a business transaction with some less then honest people. You guys came through & stood by everything that was promised to me. — Robin Hamann
I’m so thankful to have found the NYN School of Photography. You have exceeded my expectations. It is such a leap of faith to buy anything off the net these days! The manuals are so clear, straightforward and just plain common sense, and the personal telephone support has been phenomenal. Blue Skies, Trez Fleming
My name is Candy, and I haven't yet had the opportunity to sit down and thank you for your course. It has completely changed the way I view photography. I must admit that spending on your course was a huge risk. I felt a lot of FEAR that I may get nothing from it. But now I wonder how I would be doing this without your course. You guys have helped me out so much, and I look forward to your newsletters. I know so many legalistic photographers, but you guys are the REAL DEAL! — Thank you Candy Washburne
